Spooky Music

For October 2023, I decided to make a list of 31 of some of my favorite spooky tracks. It's hard to narrow it down to just 31, and even among many of these tracks it was hard to narrow it down to just one from the artist or album.

I compiled them all into a playlist on YouTube, if you want an easy way to listen to them all.

1. Lomando Outside

ytpmv video game music

A YTPMV-style cover of the Outside music from the SNES/Genesis Addams Family game using clips from Lomando, a horror/puzzle web game.

2. Skinny Puppy - The Choke

electro-industrial

An absolute classic, 100% essential. It's hard to make a spooky music playlist without simply filling it with Skinny Puppy; for me, they're THE Halloween band.

3. Pop Will Eat Itself - Auslanderween

electro-industrial grebo

A mash up of "This is Halloween" by Danny Elfman for the Tim Burton film "Nightmare Before Christmas" and "Ich Bin Ein Auslander" by Pop Will Eat Itself from the album Dos Dios Mi Amigos. The whole album is great. Also that guy's guitar is huge.

4. Ministry - Everyday (Is Halloween)

industrial rock / synthpop

Another essential. Industrial musicians seem to be particularly skilled at making Halloween anthems (though this is from Ministry's synthpop era). Cool lyrics, cool video. Chicago represent.

5. Tomoya Ohtani, Hunnid-P - A Ghost's Pumpkin Soup

video game music / hip-hop

One of the coolest video game levels with one of the coolest video game tracks. The great emerald's power allows me to feel.

6. Frank Zappa - Goblin Girl

art rock / experimental rock

I liked Frank Zappa ever since I was a kid; anytime my dad played his music I always loved how colorful it was, in more ways than one. I particularly enjoy the reactions people have to his music. For me, this is a classic Halloween song.

7. Gorillaz - Shy-Town

downtempo / electropop

Spooky toony music, perfect for walking thru empty streets at night. also, shy town is where I live, literally and figuratively.

8. Japan - Ghosts

art pop

Self-explanatory if you know the song, which you should. Sparse pop music with a perfect mood from one of my favorite art pop albums. Also, David Sylvian's voice is sex.

9. Three 6 Mafia - Live by Yo Rep

memphis hip-hop

These guys are also masters of the halloweeny spooky vibes. An all-time classic hip-hop group.

10. Natas - Be Careful What U Wish

horrorcore

A great halloweenesque hip-hop album. "This ain't the same old story, rags to riches, I feel like I'm in hell even though I got my wishes" are lines I really love and relate to.

11. Esham - Closed Casket

acid rap / horrorcore

He goes so fucking hard on this entire album, especially this song. "Once again, it seems that I cannot win, and when I die I'm going to hell again". I love him and his lyrics so much, definitely one of the hip-hop artists closest to my heart.

12. Dr. Octagon - Blue Flowers

abstract hip-hop / east coast hip-hop

Paramedic fetus of the east. Great lyricist, great song, great album, great artist. I saw him live and it was amazing even for a reclusive nerd like me. That era of my life was, in retrospect, a high point. Fortunately, there are many :-)

13. Yamane Michiru - Crystal Teardrops

neoclassical darkwave / video game music

This song has such a perfect mood, just beautiful. It really makes me want to live in a castle like the one in this game. Lovely use of pads, too, which are one of my favorite uses of synthesizers. And the bass is so good… And the organ is so good…

14. Coil - Titan Arch

post-industrial / experimental

These guys were truly at home in the darkness. This track has a tension that sounds like something very immense is going to happen. Magick ritual music for real. I'm very glad bands like this have existed; makes me feel less alone.

15. Burning Star Core - Mysteries of the Organ

experimental ambient

BxC's incredible sound design is woefully underrecognized. Nobody does it like he does; "drone" in no way suffices. It's so hard to pick just one but I think the nostalgic feel of this track is universal.

16. Demdike Stare - Nothing But the Night

ambient dub / dark ambient

Midnight music so drenched in darkness it's impossible not to love. I recommend this album (Symbiosis) as a whole. Put it on when you're heading off to another world.

17. Wolf Eyes - Black Vomit

noise rock

Music to get strangled by your circuit bending bodge wires to. Total fucking dread, certainly one of the most well-known noise rock bands, and this entire album is pure analog horror halloween vibes.

18. Prurient - Time's Arrow

power electronics / noise

Melancholy music to enter into winter to. I used to be obsessed with Prurient, back when he was making power electronics. But this era is also really good. This track gets me emotional. Smoke reverses back into the cigarette.

19. David Firth - A Day in Hell

experimental / post-industrial / sound collage

This was the first David Firth video I ever saw and I still adore it. I think it's a deep cut among his works so check it out if you like him. This counts as music because it features tracks by Nurse With Wound and Illusion of Safety, bands I also enjoy.

20. Boredoms - 6

experimental rock

The sounds in this track make me feel the chill of a gentle breeze in the countryside. A beautiful autumn evening mood. Sounds nothing like most of their work but they're incredible. Wish they were still making music.

21. Death Ambient - Drunken Forest

dark ambient / musique concrete

I love music with a slow and intense build-up, and this is definitely that. I love its ominous mood; another track that sounds like the dread of not knowing what, but knowing something immense and terrible is coming.

22. Ikue Mori - Like a Reflection in the Moon

modern classical / chamber music

This album is inspired by a series of Japanese woodblock paintings from the 1800s centered around the moon. The mood is captured flawlessly; a wide, yet cohesive range of incredible beauty. an all-time fave; perfection.

23. Nurse With Wound - Colder Still

experimental / industrial / sound collage

An exploration of obscure pocket dimensions that crescendos into a ritual for summoning beasts beyond perception. This was the first NWW album I heard. His music is very strange but very rewarding. Darkness with a sense of humor.

24. Nmperign & Jason Lescalleet - Sword!

drone / eai / dark ambient

A slow build to a whirlwind of bubbling rage.

25. Ghost Dope - For Your Vitality

vaporware / dark ambient

The scars of empty wastelands made audible; true nightmare music. Death is everywhere.

26. Scorn - Silver Rain Fell

underground dub / illbient / trip-hop

Ominous, hypnotic, dubby breakbeat illbient from a band that evolved from grindcore all the way to ambient dub(step). Not to sound like a broken record, but I recommend the entire record.

27. Antihoney - Doll

trip-hop

A Japanese band with a very accurate name; their music is extremely bittersweet, haunting trip-hop with ethereal, airy female vocals. And this video perfectly fits their music. I've linked this track many times but idc. Love.

28. MushroomWavved Collar - Downstairs

screwgaze

Ghostly screwgaze made of waves of off-kilter sounds, from Russia with drugzz

29. yeongrak - WINDOW PANE, IM MY HEAD,FLOATING RIB ABOVE MY HEAD

experimental electronic

Amorphous, truly alien music beyond words. Less human; more "something else". A multidisciplinary whose audio sounds exactly like their visuals look; one who has created a niche unlike any other. 🕷

30. vokehead - Point Xan

breakcore

Longing, desperate breakcore. Reaching for something far beyond with nothing but our small human bodies. To feel it slip through our fingers.

31. cEvin Key - No More Ghosts

electro-industrial

A frenetic minecart ride through a cavern of phantoms, spirits, and broken radio transmissions. No more ghosts, no more fuzzy pictures.

32. bonus: Krovo - Ash

experimental electronic

A track from an autumn-inspired EP I made long ago, meant to sound like a forest which later becomes engulfed by the blaze of wildfire, reduced to ash.
